Snippets that have caught my eye this week from around the web….
The internet has been crammed with articles in the last couple of weeks about Trump’s ‘travel ban’, and as an immigrant myself – and one who could not have been made more welcome in this sleepy little village in south-west France which I now choose to call home – I feel I have a vested interest in the matter. It’s worth remembering that this is not a new issue.
Being an intelligent species doesn’t seem to prevent us from displaying less than intelligent behaviour.
“Over the last ten years, investors in the Value Index Fund earned a total of 20.8%, while the fund itself earned 76.6%. The 55.8% difference means that investors in the fund captured just 27.2% of the total return that was available over that period.” There’s a reason why we have a discretionary mandate to manage our clients’ portfolios, and this is it.
The average life span of successful family firms appears to be 24 years (which coincides with the average time that the founder is associated with the company). Once again, emotions are often at the root of the problems.

And finally, what do you do when you’re stuck in Las Vegas airport overnight? Shoot a ridiculous music video, of course.
