26 Jul The Weekend Starts Here....
After the short break, I’ve a bumper crop of links for you this week. Hopefully, there will be something to suit all tastes.
We regularly test our clients’ emotional tolerance to risk. It’s a central tenet of our investment proposition – that both we and our clients can be confident that they will stay the course during times of stockmarket volatility. This piece looks at the extent to which our attitude to risk is a behavioural phenomenon [Joe Wiggins 4 min read].
It also echoes a piece I wrote for my blog a few weeks ago about how our own personal histories affect our attitude to risk, ICYMI. I’ll Keep the Car Until I’m 80 [4 min read]
This is a fascinating animation showing how the most populous cities changed between 1500 and 2018 [2:19 animation]

“Since the intelligence test was invented more than 100 years ago, our IQ scores have been steadily increasing. Even the average person today would have been considered a genius compared to someone born in 1919 – a phenomenon known as the Flynn effect.” Have we reached ‘peak intelligence’? [4 min read]
This duo has a great future ahead of them on Britain’s Got Talent 😂 [1:59 video]
It’s hard for non-French people to understand how important Notre Dame cathedral is to Paris. I guess for the UK the equivalent would be St Paul’s. Following the terrible fire earlier this year, this is a fascinating article from The New York Times about just how close the city came to losing the cathedral altogether. Firefighters the world over are just incredible people [7 min read]
How much water should we really be drinking each day? [7 min read]
I would imagine that most financial planners have stories about clients like those in this next piece, Today vs Tomorrowland. I know I do. It’s a delicate balance. [Jeremy Walter 3 min read]

“Should I fake a divorce with my wife so we can split my pension and avoid a tax bill, then remarry her?”. No (saved you a click 😉) [3 min read]
And finally. We’ve all been dealing with insane levels of heat this week, haven’t we? It’s been over 42C here the last 3 days, which frankly is too hot to go out in! I pity anyone who has had to use the London Underground this week. This story about a sweltering rush hour on the New York subway cropped up on Twitter this week and I thought I’d share it with you (note, some language) [Captain Awkward 2 min read]
We’ve reached peak festival time here in SW France. Our neighbouring village, Marciac (I took the photo above earlier this week when Eddie and I popped into our favourite café for a coffee. and preparations were still in progress) saw their annual Jazz Festival kick off last night with a performance from Sting. Yes, Sting 😲. 11,000 people (almost 10 times the population of the village) got to see him perform. We’re off to see Gregory Porter this evening. Voice of an angel. Then our village fete kicks off tomorrow. It’s going to be a long weekend!
Whatever you’re up to this weekend, I hope it’s a good one.
